Ming Pao reporters queue for Chief Editor’s lai see

[中文][Apr 2011 - The Journalist] Media companies don’t have a Chinese New Year break. Instead, reporters are given lai sees or red packets. Apple Daily gave out the biggest lai see this Year. Apart from the $100 red packets, employees received $300 more, paid directly into their bank accounts in lieu of the annual year-end dinner.

RTHK, as usual, handed out a symbolic $2 coin to is staff. TVB, ATV and Cable News staffs $20, while those at HKEJ, SCMP and Oriental Daily received $100 each. Employees working “across the New Year Eve” received $100 and the rest received $20. Sing Tao, having a record high profit, handed out $20 lai sees.

Lai sees are handed out by heads of individual desks but at SCMP this year, Miss Kuok Hui-kwong, CEO and Managing Director of SCMP Group Ltd., personally handed them out. Last year Miss Kuok hanbded out $1,000 lai sees because the year-end bonuses was cut. According to chatter on the grapevine Ming Pao’s Chief Editor Simon Cheung happily became a “prey” for red packet hunters, with a six metre of reporters waiting for his “blessings”.
